The Pound Euro exchange rate GBP EUR is trading at 1.20151, up 0.57%. The Pound Dollar exchange rate GBP USD is trading at 1.54847, up 0.34%.
The Pound Australian Dollar exchange rate GBP AUD is trading at 1.1.48376, down 0.22%. The Pound New Zealand Dollar currency rate GBP NZD is trading at 1.92919, down 0.02%.
The Sterling Rand rate GBP ZAR is trading at 12.31729, up 0.37%.

UK retail sales figures released today by the Office for National Statistics show a rise of 0.6% in the last month of last year 2011. Thsi rise has been attributed to the high street shops severe slashing of prices in the run up to Christmas
in order to boost sales. Inflation in the UK also fell in December. The last quarter's GBP data is to be released next week, and is widely predicted to show a contrcation in eth UK eceomony for that period.

Meanwhile in Europe, Italy announced a new investment plan, comprising of 5.5 billion Euros, to help prevent any further degradation of its economy. After pressure from the IMF and the EU, Greece reveiled a revenue-raising
scheme that involves allowing film companies and photo shoots to use ancient treasures such as the Acropolis.

The currency markets have shown Pound Sterling making gains across most of the major currencies, most notably the Pound to Czech Koruna trading up 1.24% on the day at 30.57523. The Pound Canadian Dollar (GBP CAD) trading up 0.5%,
Pound Swiss Franc (GBP CHF) trading up 0.59%, Pound Chinese Yuan (GBP CNY) trading up 0.65%, Pound to Euro (GBP EUR) trading up 0.61%, Pound Hong Kong Dollar (GBP HKD) trading up 0.36%, Pound Swedish Krona (GBP SEK) trading up 0.9%, Pound Turkish Lira (GBP TRY) trading up 0.59%, Pound Dollar (GBP USD) up 0.37% and the Pound Rand GBP ZAR) up 0.48%.

Sterling lost ground against the Australian Dollar and New Zealand Dollar, with the GBP AUD trading down 0.22% and the GBP NZD trading down 0.06% on the day. Pound Sterling also lost ground to the Mexican Pseo GBP MXN down 0.05% today.
