Pound-to-Dollar Forecast: UK Inflation Surprise Pushes GBP/USD towards $1.34

Pound-to-Dollar Forecast

The Pound to US Dollar (GBP/USD) exchange rate gained ground on Wednesday after stronger-than-expected UK inflation figures reinforced expectations of further Bank of England (BoE) interest rate increases.

At the time of writing, GBP/USD was trading at approximately $1.3394, edging higher during the session and approaching the $1.3400 level.

Sterling found support after the latest UK consumer price index (CPI) revealed that inflation accelerated more sharply than economists had anticipated in September.

Figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed annual headline inflation climbing from 3.1% to 3.5%, exceeding forecasts for an increase to 3.4%.

The reading marked the highest inflation rate in almost a year, with higher energy tariffs contributing significantly to the acceleration.

Core inflation also increased, suggesting that price pressures were not confined to energy costs.

The figures strengthened expectations that the Bank of England will raise interest rates at its November meeting, while encouraging speculation that further tightening could follow during the coming months.

Combined with Tuesday's unexpectedly strong employment figures, the inflation report has reinforced the argument that policymakers may need to maintain a more restrictive stance to bring price growth under control.

However, Sterling's advance was restrained by renewed concerns over the UK's public finances.

Government borrowing exceeded expectations in September, adding to the challenges facing Chancellor John Healey ahead of next week's Autumn Budget.

Higher debt-servicing costs and persistent inflation could further restrict the Treasury's fiscal headroom, leaving investors cautious about the sustainability of Sterling's recent recovery.

The US Dollar (USD), meanwhile, remained under pressure as continued weakness in artificial intelligence (AI) stocks unsettled investors and reinforced doubts about further Federal Reserve monetary tightening.

Concerns have grown over whether the substantial investment being directed towards AI infrastructure will generate sufficient returns.

Investors are also increasingly questioning the financial resilience of companies involved in the sector's rapid expansion, particularly those relying heavily on borrowed capital.

The possibility that financial difficulties could spread beyond technology companies has added to concerns about the wider US economic outlook.

Against this backdrop, expectations for another Federal Reserve interest rate increase have weakened considerably.

Markets now broadly anticipate that policymakers will leave borrowing costs unchanged at next week's meeting, reducing support for the Dollar.

Near-Term GBP/USD Forecast: UK Retail Sales and PMIs Could Test $1.34

The Pound to US Dollar exchange rate is approaching the important $1.3400 level, but further gains may depend on whether upcoming UK economic releases reinforce the recent improvement in Sterling sentiment.

Attention will turn to September's retail sales figures and October's preliminary purchasing managers' index (PMI) surveys.

Economists expect consumer spending to have softened, while growth across the UK's dominant services sector is also forecast to have slowed.

Disappointing readings could raise concerns that higher borrowing costs and persistent inflation are beginning to weigh more heavily on economic activity.

Such an outcome could temper expectations for further Bank of England tightening and make it harder for GBP/USD to establish a sustained move above $1.3400.

Conversely, stronger-than-expected figures would provide further evidence of UK economic resilience and could allow Sterling to extend its recovery.

For the US Dollar, Thursday's initial jobless claims figures will provide another indication of labour-market conditions.

A larger-than-expected increase in unemployment benefit applications could reinforce expectations that the Federal Reserve will remain on hold, potentially weakening the Dollar further.

A sustained break above $1.3400 would strengthen the near-term outlook for Sterling, while renewed selling pressure could see GBP/USD retreat towards the $1.3350 area.
